Tuesday Tunes #38: Goblin’s “Round and round” Lyrics

We talk about music each week on the blog for Tuesday Tunes, and I often touch on each of the bits and pieces of what I love about the song or songs that I feature, but I feel like I often skip out on one thing that I’ve always loved about music:  lyrics.

Goblin’s “Round and round” Lyrics

Music reaches beyond lyrics in many different ways, but I think for most of us the very first thing that got us attached to a particular tune as a child was the words that went along with it.  When enjoying media that’s in a non-native tongue, a lot of the time we can miss out on the lyrical value of the music that’s presented.

Round6

Goblin: The Lonely and Great God is one show in particular that’s full of great music.  The original soundtrack is packed with wonderful listening, but it’s the one that we hear at the beginning of each episode that I enjoy in particular.  A gentle, wrenching melody that evokes the tone of the show quite nicely, “Round and round” is a beautiful listen.

Although the “Round and round” is actually written in English, I actually missed that fact due to the wistful pronunciation the singer, Han Soo Ji, utilizes in the 50-second opening thematic.  I just assumed that certain phrases were in English, not the actual full song, it took me a while to ask, “Wait, is this whole thing in English?  It sounds like English.”  Upon looking it up I was surprised to find that, indeed, there’s zero Korean in the opening song, haha.  Go figure!

Round2

For the OST, there was a full version created that actually caused a bit of controversy among fans.  Soo Ji, the original artist in the 50-second version, is relatively unknown, and thus was passed over for the full version in favor of popular singer, songwriter, and rapper, Heize.  Soo Ji only got a credit as a featured artist, and people felt upset that she wasn’t hired on to complete the track.  Considering the cultural phenomenon that was Goblin in Korea–the controversy was the real deal, yo.

Regardless of where you stand on the artist dilemma, “Round and round” (the final OST version) was actually written prior to the creation of the 50-second TV spot, and the lyrical value still stands.

Round3

Parts of the text make it feel sort of Engrish-y (including the lack of title case for, “Round and round”), but who cares, this song stands on its own.  Let’s soak in some lyrics, shall we?

“Round and round” by Heize ft. Han Soo Ji

See ya
Never gone my way
Better will someday
Never far away

See ya
Never gone my way
Better on my stay
Never far away

Round and round
And I never know why
Round and round
And it will show us way out
It’s my delight

As day goes by
You hold on tight
Another day
You’re wondering why
But you know why
No other way

Somedays the sun will shine down
Somedays the moon will cry
Tomorrow we’ll see
Tomorrow we’ll be
As we go on our way

The world in your eyes
Forever is lie
As we go on our way
There is a thousand things to know
Sometimes we’re standing by
The things we never understand
As we go on our own way

The sun goes down
The tides are low
I’ll see you on the day
Letting you go on your way

See ya
Never gone my way
Never we’ll someday
Never far away

See ya
Never gone my way
Never on my day
Never far away

Round and round
And I never know why
Round and round
And it will show us way out
It’s my delight
