You know this already, but, dang it, I love all things Disney. And, yes, that includes the many villains that Disney has to offer. I’ve talked about my adoration for Disney villains at least once before, twice if you include Luna Girl as a Disney Villain, but I’ve yet to dedicate a Freebie Friday to them.
Well, today is that day. And it’s about dang time.
Just a Touch of Evil
Between Disney animated shorts, comic books, television shows, and movies, there are almost too many Disney villains to count. You can go as far back as Peg-Leg Pete, all the way up to Thanos, due to appear this May in Avengers: Infinity War.
But, really, it makes sense that there’s so many. Without villains, heroes wouldn’t be heroes. Without an antagonist, a protagonist really can never be born. Vice, we well know, is essential for virtue. It’s a funny balance system, but it has to exist within storytelling. The stories you’re reading wouldn’t be much without an opposing force.
Everyone loves a great villain, not only because they entertain our thrill for going against the norm, but also because a great villain is what defines a great story. There are lots of fantastic heroes, but they’re only in existence because they faced a foe that forced them to be. Ordinary dudes become extraordinary only because they are called to action because, yes, evil pushes them to do so.
So, it’s okay if your favorite Disney characters are the baddies. In fact, we can thank those malefactors because without them Disney really wouldn’t exist! Today’s freebie has that gratitude in mind, highlighting four fierce female offenders that we know and love: the Evil Queen, Ursula, Mother Gothel, and Yzma. Enjoy your evil hearts out!
