Freebie Friday

Freebie Friday #14: Oogie Boogie

I re-watch certain movies that I’d watch as a kid, and it’s often quite funny to see the parts that I couldn’t handle.  Like, I remember having a series of very real nightmares where my older sister and I would fall into Wonderland only to have her kidnapped by the Grinch–and it scared me awake every time he’d pop out in the dream.  Like, what’s so scary about the Grinch?

Of course, there’s lots of scenes and characters that still scare me a bit.  The Horned King from The Black Cauldron is still one of the freakiest bad guys every created.  Who knew John Hurt could be so freaking terrifying?!  This week’s freebie is another bad guy that still manages to startle me–Oogie Boogie.

Oogie Boogie

Okay, okay, I know that Oogie Boogie is basically a sackcloth stuffed with bugs, but he SCARES ME SO MUCH.  If you remember last week’s Freebie Friday, you’ll recall me admitting how much I hate bugs, so you’ll probably understand why Oogie Boogie gets to me.  Guys, he so gross.

He’s an effective villain, however.  This guy literally causes people pain and suffering just for the kicks he gets out of it–and he’s very open about that fact.  For an antagonist to be fueled by wanting everyone to fear them and forever remain in fear, now that’s terrifying.  To this day I struggle to watch his song; as I kid I was running out of the room or covering my eyes until it was done.  (MAGGOTS, NOOO.)

Oogie Boogie’s character design is simple and adequately petrifying–and that not-so-sweet little face of his is perfect to hang for Halloween.  He was the perfect subject for today’s Freebie Friday!

But, ugh, seriously.  Why the maggots.  Still can’t fully handle it.
